Facility Support Staff play a vital role in maintaining the smooth operation and overall appearance of HOC’s 76-acre property, which includes over 1,500 feet of shoreline, 46 buildings, 10 sports programs, and facilities used daily by more than 200 campers and 100 staff. The two Facility Support Staff members help keep this vibrant environment running safely and efficiently through daily cleaning, maintenance, and repair work.

Responsibilities include a wide range of tasks such as daily cleaning rounds (washrooms, garbage collection), groundskeeping (grass cutting and trimming), and general maintenance projects (painting, raking, bunk and cabin repairs). Staff also assist with activity-related maintenance, for example, repairing bikes or equipment as needed.

Facility Support Staff must hold a valid G driver’s license, as the role involves completing daily Town Runs to Sundridge or South River and weekly trips to Huntsville and/or North Bay to collect mail and camp supplies. Regular dump runs (2–3 times per week) using a pick-up truck and trailer are also part of the maintenance rotation. During scheduled rotations, Facility Support Staff will operate the Tuck Shop, which provides campers with snacks and treats.

This position is ideal for someone detail-oriented, organized, and capable of working independently. While Facility Support Staff work primarily behind the scenes, they should enjoy being part of a busy camp environment and take pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming space for campers and staff.

Facility Support Staff work on a rotating schedule of two 40-hour weeks, alternating between 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m., with one 4-hour weekend shift (Saturday or Sunday). Salary is based on experience and qualifications (minimum wage for those living off camp property).

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Must have a general interest in keeping the camp community looking presentable, clean, and safe for campers and staff.
  • Create and execute your job in a productive, professional, and fun manner.
  • Always wear/follow proper safety guidelines when completing tasks.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete daily camp cleaning rounds, including garbage pickups (changing garbage bags and taking them to the appropriate area), and washroom cleaning/sanitization.
  • Will be asked to complete minor maintenance tasks (shovelling sand, raking, helping with tree removal, etc.)
  • Will be asked to complete minor building projects (assembling bunks, siding repairs, cabin repairs, window replacement, painting, etc.).
  • Will be asked to assist with basic program maintenance items (fixing bikes, arrows, etc).
  • Must be able to use basic lawn care equipment (riding lawn mower, push mower, grass trimmer, leaf blower, etc.).
  • Basic mechanical knowledge is a plus.
  • Run Tuck Shop times three afternoons a week. Be responsible for keeping the Tuck Shop clean and organized.
  • Will rotate through a Sunday to Friday, or Monday to Saturday schedule. Weekend shifts will be 4 hours in length, and weekday shifts will be 7.5 hours in length.
  • Drive a pick-up truck with a dump trailer containing garbage and recyclables to the local waste facility and dispose of it in the proper unloading areas, two to three times a week.
  • Complete local town runs daily, and trips to Huntsville and/or North Bay weekly to pick up/purchase camp-related items.
  • Assist the Head of Maintenance when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • All staff are expected to abide by and enforce the camp guidelines of respect. These are the rules and expectations of behaviour implemented to maintain a fun and safe camp environment. 
  • Attendance for all staff at the June Orientation Week training is mandatory. This training period is where each staff member will receive essential employment information and training for a successful summer experience.
  • The dynamic nature of summer camp demands that each staff member understand that additional duties may be assigned as required.

QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 17 years of age.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in general maintenance (e.g., plumbing, construction).
  • Interest in working in a residential camp environment.
  • Outgoing, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and positive.
  • Valid G driver’s license and ability to drive a pickup truck with a trailer.
  • Willingness to participate in activities beyond primary responsibilities.

Certifications:

  • Emergency First Aid and CPR.
  • Respect in Sport certification.
