Talking Hockey: Puck Handling Skill Progressions

Just like the pros, it is important to keep your puck handling skills fresh every chance you get.

When the puck is on your stick, you don’t want to lose it!

Today, HOC's Coach Keith, David & Josh are going to show you some ways you can keep your hands loose during the season.

Puck Handling Skill Progression Drills:

  • 4 Quadrants - eyes up, body in power position, maneuvering puck through 4 zones.
  • 1 Glove - one glove down on ice, eyes up, body in power position, maneuvering puck around one glove in front of you in circular formation - clockwise and counterclockwise.
  • 2 Glove Horizontal - two gloves down in front of you side by side (with space in between), eyes up, body in power position, maneuvering puck around each glove in figure 8 formation.
  • 2 Glove Vertical - two gloves down in front of you vertically (with more space in between), eyes up, body in power position, gliding forward and backward maneuvering puck around each glove in figure 8 formation.
  • Figure Eight Body - two gloves down in front of you vertically (with lots of room in between), eyes up, body moving forward with tight turns and stickhandling in figure 8 formation around gloves.
  • Random Pucks - random pucks spread out, eyes up, body moving with tight turns and stickhandling around pucks.

If you can’t find an outdoor rink (we hope you can!), find a safe spot at home and swap out your puck for a weighted ball.
