Day Camp Swim Instructor Job Description

Job Title: Day Camp Swim Instructor
Report To: Day Camp/Camp Only Coordinator
Number of Positions Available: Head Swim Instructor (1), Assistant Swim Instructor (1)

Day Camp Swim Instructors work throughout the day directly with local children who are bussed in. Day Camp programming begins at 9:30 am and ends at 3:30 pm. Instructors are hired to teach Red Cross Swim Kids certified swimming lessons. They provide one on one instruction to campers and complete written evaluations for each camper.

The Head Swim Instructor teaches classes and is responsible for supervising the Assistant Swim Instructor.

Instructors also assist (where needed) day camp counsellors with daily/special day camp programming. Programming may include arts and crafts, overnight camping, theme/special days, "feeling groovy", low organizational games, canoeing, and sports.

Instructors may also assist day camp campers while they participate in camp activities. Activities include kayaking, snorkeling, tubing, wet & wild, mountain biking, windsurfing, wall climbing, outdoor adventure and archery.

In addition to responsibilities during the day, staff also have evening responsibilities in the cabins with children one night per week and are also required to assist with evening activities three nights per week.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD:
Staff Orientation / Training: June 22nd, 2008 – June 28th, 2008
Employment Period: June 29th, 2008 – August 23rd, 2008

WAGES
Summer wages range from $2,200 – $2,600 per summer depending on age, qualifications and experience of applicants. Room and board is included.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 16 years of age.
- Genuine interest in working with children in the community.
- Experience teaching and communicating with children of varied ages. Specific camp experience an asset.
- Minimum Lifesaving Instructor Award (LSI).
- Emergency First Aid and CPR certification.
- Must be enthusiastic, energetic and positive person.
- Must be willing to take part in camp related activities outside the defined job description.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- Ensure that proper equipment use and safety rules are followed when instructing activities.
- Provide care to our campers that reflect the standards and guidelines of the Hockey Opportunity Camp Code of Conduct.
- Instruct classes that are age appropriate, productive, and fun.
- Be an active participant in the camp community.
- Sign and abide by Hockey Opportunity Camp's Privacy Policy.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITY:
- Supervise children daily from 9:30am to 3:30 pm
- Teach 2-3 swim classes each day with the curriculum of the Red Cross Swim Kids awards system
- Progressively evaluate camper's skill development, complete weekly camper evaluations and stuff in camper's achievement envelopes.
- Assist counsellors with day camp programming and special activity days.
- Assist with life guarding recreational swims.
- Assist with evening programming including;
- evening activities twice per week.
- All Camp activities once per week.
- Friday Family Nights weeks 3 and 6
- evening cabin supervision once per week.
- Attend Staff Orientation week in late June.
- Complete work brigades Sunday morning before camper registration.
- Assist Sunday camper registration.
- Attend Thursday evening "Study Hall" for evaluation writing
- Work one "Duty Weekend" which entails participation at the Friday night campfire, supervision of a cabin on Friday night if necessary and provide programming and supervision for holdover campers Saturday and Sunday.
- Counsellors get one weekend off through out the summer. This is scheduled with the Camp Director at the beginning of the summer.
