| Job Title: Section Head Report To: Counselling Coordinator Number of Positions Available: 6 Section Heads not only take on the responsibilities of camp counsellors, they also supervise counsellors in their section as well as creatively develop programming (section activities/theme days) for the section. Each section consists of 40-45 campers and 3-5 counsellors. Like the counsellors they supervise, they also are the ones who work the most closely with our campers and supervise them each evening in their cabins, when they are in camp, at meals or during their activities. Section Heads also either teach or assist Activity Instructors with one camper in-camp activity class. Section Heads require many different personal and professional skills, which determine their best fit with an age group at camp. Those who are responsible for younger children require a high level of maturity and "parent like" sensibilities allowing them to deal with such matters as homesickness and bedtime. They are required to facilitate one-on-one attention and continually find creative solutions for keeping campers occupied and having fun. Section Heads who are responsible for older children require strong communication and discipline skills. A strong understanding of the camper's interests and preferred activities is crucial to ensuring the camper has a fun and productive time at camp. EMPLOYMENT PERIOD: Staff Orientation / Training: June 22nd, 2008 June 28th, 2008 Employment Period: June 29th, 2008 August 23rd, 2008 WAGES: Summer wages for Section Heads range from $2,000 - $3,000 per summer depending on qualifications, responsibility and experience. Room and board is included. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Minimum of 18 years old. - At least two summers of counselling experience - Must posses a genuine interest in working with children and leading people. - Extensive experience teaching and communicating to children of varied ages in a children's camp environment. - Minimum of a Bronze Cross swimming qualification. - Current certificate of Emergency First Aid, and CPR. - Must be enthusiastic, energetic, creative, and spontaneous. - Must posses strong written and verbal communication skills. - Must be willing to take part in camp related activities outside the defined job description. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY: - Provide counselling & guidance while living with a group of campers. - Provide care to our campers that reflect the standards and guidelines of the Hockey Opportunity Camp Code of Conduct. - Ensure that safety and health regulations are strictly adhered to. - Be an active participant in the camp community. - Sign and abide by Hockey Opportunity Camp's Privacy Policy - Abide and enforce all camp policies. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITY: - Attend the Sr. Staff Weekend including Orientation week in late June. - Be knowledgeable in all safety procedures: including fire, land and aquatic emergency procedures. - Assist Sunday camper registration. - Instruct or assist with teaching one activity class. - Supervise counsellors working within the section - Assume responsibility for your groups overall time table and creatively program section activities and theme days. - Make announcements and give direction at meals. - Supervise campers at all times other than when campers are at arena or assigned to Camp Only counsellors. - Assist counsellors with camper discipline problems and alert Co-ordinator to any issues that may arise. - Ensure the cabins of your section are kept clean and orderly, as well as any other camp area that is assigned to your section. - Assist with All-camp activities as assigned. - Ensure that campers with special medical/personal needs are properly supervised. - Assume a leadership position in an emergency situation. - Working with the Counsellor Coordinator, evaluate staff in your section by providing ongoing informal evaluations and also three written performance appraisals. - Reinforce the camp philosophy, policies and standards by acting as a role model to other counsellors. - Ensure that each camper has the experience of their lives! |
