JOB DESCRIPTION

Program Heads are hired to lead a specific program activity. Similar to Activity instructors, they instruct approximately 6 one-hour classes each day to campers of all ages. Program Heads are responsible for teaching campers the safety requirements of their activity, as well as a series of skills based on the established awards system.

Additional responsibilities of Program Heads include, supervising Activity Instructors who instruct in their program area and completing written evaluations of those staff three times per summer, in cooperation with the Program Coordinator. A major component of the job responsibility is equipment repair and maintenance as well as monitoring the safety of equipment and program area.

Every week instructors, including program heads, are responsible for writing personal evaluations on each camper they teach during the week. Program Heads do not have evening responsibilities in cabins with children every night, but are required to assist one night a week on Counsellor night off and with All Camps and evening activities.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD:
Staff Orientation / Training: June 20th, 2008 – June 28th, 2008
Employment Period: June 29th, 2008 – August 23rd, 2008

WAGES:
Summer wages range from $2,000 - $3,200 per summer depending on qualifications and experience of applicants. Room and board is included.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- A minimum of 18 years of age.
- Genuine interest in teaching outdoor activities to children & supervising peers.
- Bronze Cross swimming qualification for all activity instructional staff. This applies to both land and water activity staff.
- Must be provincially certified and/or be experienced on the instructor level in the program you intend to instruct.
- Possess the ability to teach and communicate with varied ages of campers.
- Current certificate of Emergency First Aid, and CPR
- Must be an enthusiastic, energetic and positive person.
- Must be willing to take part in camp related activities outside the defined job description.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:

- Ensure that proper equipment use, and safety rules are followed by both campers and staff in your activity area.
- Provide care to our campers that reflects the standards and guidelines of the Hockey Opportunity Camp Code of Conduct
- Teach classes that are age appropriate, productive, and fun.
- Be an active participant in the camp community.
- Sign and abide by Hockey Opportunity Camp's Privacy Policy.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITY:

- Responsible for program development and promotion during May Planning week-end, Pre-Camp Orientation and throughout the summer.
- Be knowledgeable in all safety procedures: including fire, land and aquatic emergency procedures.
- Complete work brigades Sunday morning before camper registration.
- Prepare a program display for Sunday Registration.
- Promote your activity area during Sunday camper registration.
- Develop complete lesson plans for all classes taught.
- Maintain equipment inventories throughout the summer.
- Ensure that equipment and program site safety checks take place on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Teach 60-minute classes in program areas of expertise (6 classes/day).
- Assist with evening programming including; evening cabin supervision once per week, all camp activities once per week and friday Family Nights weeks 3 and 6.
- Progressively evaluate camper's skill development, complete weekly camper evaluations and stuff in camper's achievement folders.
- Complete activity attendance sheets daily for each class taught.

- Attend Thursday evening "Study Hall" for evaluation writing.
- Reinforce the camp philosophy, policies and standards by acting as a role model to other activity instructors.
- Work one "Duty Weekend" which entails participation at the Friday night campfire and provide programming and supervision for holdover campers Saturday and Sunday.
- Activity Instructors get one weekend off through out the summer. This is scheduled with the Camp Director at the beginning of the summer.
- Write a season ending Program report summarizing the Activity area.
- Ensure that each camper is has the experience of their lives!
